Yes you can enjoy an independent day walk on the Milford Track. However, as has been mentioned, it will still cost you over NZ$100 per person, return, for the launch trip up Lake Te Anau. You first drive 20 minutes or so to Te Anau Downs to catch the launch up the lake. The boat ride takes over 1 hour.
